Tourists staying in Kalkan can visit Kaputas Cave, which is located six kilometers from the town. Measuring 50x40x15, the cave is rather impressive by the way sunlight is reflected into the cave to produce incredible hues of green and blue. The cave is big enough to wander through it in a small motorboat, whereas there is the nearby Kaputaş Beach as well, which is an ideal spot to take a dip in the sea.
Because it shelters so many pigeons, the cave behind Ince Burun and two kilometers from Kalkan is known as the Güvercinlik Sea Cave. Both the small, narrow mouthed Güvercinlik İni and the Deniz Cave are 100 meters from the Güvercinlik Cave. The road goes as far as Inbaş Cave, on the Bezirgan Village shoreline near Kalkan. Kalkan is a good rest spot with its quaint whitewashed buildings that have been turned into pensions and restaurants over the past several years. They look fabulous in spring, decked out with purple and red bougainvillea flowers.
Daily excursions to nearby locations will enrich your holiday experience in Kalkan. For instance, a good place for trekking is the Bezirgan Plateau, which is situated just above Kalkan. Ruins of an ancient city called Pirha can be seen in the hills above the village of Bezirgan, which is full of greenery.
Trekking 15 minutes from the village, one reaches the remains at a height of 850 meters sea level. The mountain cliff is full of several stone tombs. As for sarcophagi, they are seen scattered in a sloppy manner. At Göldağ, on the border of the two villages of Bezirgan and Islamlar, one finds incredibly worked stone tombs that are interconnected to each other. Exiting the village of Bezirgan on the way to Gömbe, one encounters a Lycian house-type tomb that has been carved into the rock opposite a plane tree. This tomb, which was decorated with both inner and outer reliefs, is currently in a damaged state.
Continuing down this road, one arrives in the village of Sütleğen, which shelters a myriad hues of green. A little below this point are the Nisa ruins in a place called Meryemlik.
One will not see much more than the rubble of the theater, the ancient road that passed through here as well as sarcophagi.
Passing through Sütleğen, this road takes us to Gömbe. Gömbe, which has an abundant supply of water, is famous for its Uçansu Waterfalls and Yeşilgöl. The ruins of ancient Chomba are located in Gömbe.
WATER SPORTS
Enjoy an array of water sports, including snorkeling over the sunken city at Kekova, scuba diving, sea kayaking, water skiing, jet skiing, banana and ringo rides, sailing or ever renting a boat to take you to the nearby beautiful bays for swimming and sunbathing.
JEEP SAFARI
A 180km round trip in a jeep convoy off the beaten track: explore the ruins of the ancient cities of Tlos and Xhanthos, see the art of carpet and kilim making at a traditional factory; cool off in the icy rapids and streams of the hidden Saklikent Canyon; and relax on the white sands of the 18km long Patara Beach. In our opinion, this is absolutely the best day out around.
BOAT TOURS
To sail and enjoy the surrounding bays and beaches why not join the daily boat tours? Most boats are located in the harbout just as you step out the hotel Pirat. Local boatmen will take you along the coast for cruising and swimming on several standard excursions. No matter which excursion you take you will have lunch on board included in the price. One popular excursion is to Kekova and Ucagiz, about two hours away by boat. You can go over to Kastellorizon (Meis Adasi), the Greek island just off the coast, visible from Kas, for the day returning to Kas in the evening. Check on the current status of Kastellorizon as a port of entry. Other standard boat tours go to the Blue cave, Patara and Kas or to several small islands. For a three-day (two-night) yacht cruise along the coast expect to pay about 75 GBP per person, on a shared-yacht basis or cabin charter.
